Road safety
Each year, around 250 drivers, passengers, pedestrians and cyclists are killed or injured on East Renfrewshire’s roads. Driver error, rather than road hazards or vehicle defects, causes 95% of crashes but we need to do what we can to reduce the number of crashes, whatever the cause. We share responsibility for monitoring the safety of the road network with Strathclyde Police, and tackle the problem using the four E’s:
Education - pedestrian skills for children and responsible driving for young learners.
Enforcement - dangerous driving and speed limits (one third of all crashes involve excessive speeds).
Engineering - junction improvements and pedestrian crossings.
Encouragement - advice and or cautions from traffic police for minor misdemeanours, and promoting our Foolspeed campaign.
Our Road Safety Training Officer liaises with teaching staff to have road safety taught in schools. We also have a Road Safety Plan. It describes our targets to reduce all casualties on our roads and, in particular, states that we will halve the number of children killed or seriously injured. Read it on our website or in your local library. Remember, road safety is everyone's responsibility.
Scottish Road Safety
Road Safety Scotland's remit is to develop and co-ordinate Scotland-wide road safety initiatives and campaigns. Road Safety Scotland works closely with all local authority and police road safety units in an attempt to ensure a co-ordinated approach to road safety in Scotland.
