Right to buy

The Right to Buy is a Government run scheme that allows some tenants to purchase the property that they rent from the Council. For eligible tenants the price of the property will be offered at a price lower than the full market value.

Who is eligible?

If you are a secure tenant and have held a public sector tenancy for 2 years you may be able to purchase the property that you live in through the Right to Buy. Contact the Housing Call Centre on 0141 577 3700 for clarification.

Who cannot buy?

  • any tenant who has a service tenancy in connection with their job.

  • any sheltered housing tenant.

  • any tenant whose home has been adapted or is particularly suitable for use by the disabled or elderly.

What discount will I receive?

You could receive up to a maximum discount of 70% for a flat and 60% for a house depending on the amount of time that you have been a tenant.

  • A: The Scottish Government has granted the Eastwood area of East Renfrewshire Pressurised Area Status. This means that if you have taken up a council house tenancy on or after 28 September 2002, and you live in Thornliebank, Giffnock, Newton Mearns, Busby, Clarkston, Netherlee or Eaglesham, you do not have the right to buy your house for a minimum period of 5 years.

  • Q: I am on the waiting list / transfer list and have been offered and
    refused a house in a pressured area. Will this be counted as one of my
    offers of housing?
  • A: Yes, if you refuse a house in a pressured area, it still counts as refusing one of your housing offers. If you are worried about the areas you have chosen on your housing application form, or would like to change any of them as a result of pressured area status, contact our Housing Office on (0141) 577 3001.
