Stay Healthy and Active

Life doesn't have to slow down or stop when you retire. In this section we'll give you ideas on how to stay happy, healthy and enjoy later life.

Eat Well

It seems obvious, but a good diet can make a big difference to how you feel. The right kinds of food will give you a real energy boost.

Remember your mother used to say that eating fish made you brainy? Well, she may have been onto something; Oily fish like herring, sardines and fresh tuna are rich in Omega 3 oils which apparently boost your brain power. A recent study suggests that Omega 3 oils may also reduce the risk of Dementia.

Have an active life

A healthy brain is just as important as a healthy body. Taking up a hobby or learning something that interests you can make a real difference to how you feel – both physically and mentally. Use your retirement  to learn something you've always wanted to!

You may not be ready to give up working just yet – perhaps you fancy a part-time job or learning a new skill. Careers Scotland will be able to help. Visit their Office at 7 Bank Street, Barrhead or call 0141 881 2886

Spend time with friends and family

One of the great things about retirement is it gives you more time to spend with the people you care about. It goes without saying that people with a good home life and network of friends are likely to be happier and more content.

Getting involved in your community or taking up a new hobby is a great way to meet new people who share similar interests to you.

Volunteer

If you really want to feel good about yourself try volunteering. This could mean being more active in your community or even just helping out a neighbour.

Get regular exercise

We're not asking you to run out and join a gym – not unless you want to! There are loads of other things you can do to stay active: join a walking club, take up a leisure class or even just do the gardening.

  • Join an older people's health group.  A group currently runs in Neilston for men and women, with more planned for the future. Contact Munmun Hyder on 0141 577 8592.
