Frequently Asked Questions
- Q: I have just bought a previously licensed vehicle/premises, can I transfer the licence?
- A: No. Civic government licences are not transferable. You will need to reapply for a licence in your own name or your company's name.
- Q: What geographic area does a taxi licence cover?
- A: A private hire driver's licence covers all of East Renfrewshire.
- Q: What conditions are attached to a private hire drivers licence?
- A: A number of standard conditions apply to private hire licences. A copy of these conditions will be issued to you with your licence.
- Q: Can I get a temporary taxi/private hire drivers licence?
- A: No. If you already have a licence and you apply to renew it, your existing licence remains valid until your application has been decided. If you don't apply for a renewal before your current licence expires, or you are applying for the first time, you need to wait until your application has been decided.
- Q: As a private hire driver, can I pick up passengers anywhere?
- A: As a taxi driver or private hire car operator, you must either pick up or drop off passengers in the zone that you have a licence for. Taxis can pick up passengers in the street or from taxi ranks within East Renfrewshire. If you drive a private hire car, your passengers must pre-book their journey - you cannot pick up passengers in the street.
