Street trading
If a person wishes to sell anything in a public place, or offers to carry out for money or money’s worth any service in a public place, they require to obtain a Street Trader’s Licence from the Council. This requirement also applies if they operate from a vehicle, kiosk or stall.
However the Council has determined that only a certain number of “defined activities” require to be licensed. There are also a number of other exceptions from the requirement to obtain a licence.
In the event a licence is required in respect of an activity, all people involved in the activity require to be licensed. This means that all employees as well as the operator of the business require to obtain a licence.
If the licence relates to the selling of food, the vehicle, kiosk or stall used will be inspected by the Council’s Protective Services Division to ensure it meets the standards required by the Food Safety Act 1990.
Details of the defined activities, the exemptions from the licensing requirement, and how to apply for a licence can be obtained from the Licensing Section (0141 577 3006).
