Registering a stillbirth
The process for registering a stillbirth is identical to registering a birth.
A stillbirth must be registered with an official registrar of births, deaths and marriages within 21 days (a short extension can be made in exceptional circumstances).
You should receive a card or information sheet from the hospital with details of your baby’s stillbirth, including the time and the location. You should bring this with you to the registration office.
Parents may now register the birth of their child at any registration office in Scotland.
You should also bring along your marriage certificate if applicable.
The people who can register the stillbirth of a baby are:
If the parents are married to each other, either the mother or the father can register the stillbirth
If the parents are unmarried only the mother can register the stillbirth
If the parents are unmarried and wish the fathers name to be included on the register and birth certificate, both must attend the registration office.
Under exceptional circumstances a relative could register the birth, but you will need to contact the registrar for advice.
