The Sums

How much do you think you will spend on nappies for the time that your child is in nappies?

Well, the accepted wisdom is that the average child, in disposable nappies, will be in them for the first two and a half years. With an average of six changes every day for these 2.5years, you are looking at using five thousand two hundred and eighty nappies, per child!! At an average cost of 14.5p per nappy, that’s a whopping £765.60 for nappies for each child in nappies.

Parents and carers could save as much as £500 by buying and washing nappies at home. The Women’s Environmental Network completed a very detailed cost comparison between buying and laundering at home, and using disposables. The comparison took into consideration wear and tear on washing machines, electricity and washing powder consumption – the works! Click the image below for the full story

The Scottish Nappy Company, which provides a home delivery and nappy laundering service throughout the Central Belt has also completed a cost comparison of their service, with home laundering and using disposables. Bearing in mind that children are generally out of cloth nappies quicker that those in disposables, the Scottish Nappy Company has estimated that their service is still cheaper than using disposables. So, if the thought of washing and drying yourself is a hurdle, you can have someone else do it for you, and still save money! Again, the info is given below for your due consideration.
