Grants for Homeowners

East Renfrewshire Council provides assistance to private homeowners to upgrade and maintain their properties.

You may be eligible for help with the following type of work:

Discretionary Grants

Improvement Grants

The full range of works which are eligible for grant assistance are listed below: -

Works required for the improvement of houses, including: -

  • Alteration and enlargement;
  • Replacement of unsafe electrical wiring;
  • Installation of mains powered smoke detectors;
  • Provision of adequate heating systems;
  • Provision of adequate thermal insulation;
  • Works to make the house suitable for the accommodation, welfare or employment of a disabled occupant;
  • In a building in common ownership, installation of
    • A fire door at the entrance to each house; and
    • A main-door entyrphone system;
  • Any works required to put the house into a good state of repair, including
    • The replacement in a different material of any pipes, cisterns, taps or other equipment used for the supply of water to a house which are wholly or partly made of lead; and
    • Works intended to reduce exposure to radon gas;
  • Works to provide a means of escape from fire in a house in multiple occupation, where a notice requiring such works has been served under s.162 (para 6.10).

Repair Grants

Grants for repair are intended to deal with defects which if neglected would lead to deterioration of the fabric of the building. This most often involves action to prevent water penetration, including roof repairs, replacement of damaged harling/roughcast, or replacement of severely rotted window frames and sills.

NB We are not required to make grant available for all eligible types of work, most authorities including our own impose restrictions or set priorities. East Renfrewshire Council currently offer grant assistance for items f; g; h and I above. In some circumstances grant is mandatory; details are set out in the paragraph below.

  • A: We currently offer grants for the following types of work: housing adaptations for people with disabilities; lead pipe replacement; and repairs to housing of below tolerable standard or in a state of disrepair (only if a statutory notice has been placed on the property). Occasionally we offer grants for communal ownership repairs.
