Tenant participation
Tenant and residents associations are community groups consisting of local volunteers who meet to promote the interests of tenants and residents in their area.
The associations try to give accurate housing advice and information to tenants and residents who live in their area. They also campaign on local issues on behalf of local people. Tenants groups meet regularly to discuss issues and problems such as the delivery of Council services, housing repairs and regeneration of local estates. They also deal with issues such as street lighting, roads, children's play-areas and police and safety matters.
Tenants and residents associations can also provide the means for tenants to communicate with the Council and thereby influence the decisions that are made about their homes and the estates that they live on.
If you are interested in making a difference in your community, one of the best ways is to support your local tenants and residents association. If there is not a tenants group in your area, you may wish to get together with your neighbours to form an association. This would allow your community to meet with your local Councillor and Council staff which will give you a bigger say in the issues that affect your homes. It is often more effective to get your views across as a group rather than as an individual!
The Council supports tenants and residents associations in a variety of ways by providing advice, information and administrative support and funding to groups. In addition, the Tenant Participation Officer attends as many association meetings as possible and can arrange for other Council staff to talk about local issues at meetings.
For information on your local tenants and residents association, including details of future meetings, please contact the association directly, or alternatively contact Sandra Scott, Tenant Participation Officer on 0141 577 3715.
