Arts in the community
Drama workshops
Since 1994, East Renfrewshire’s drama programme has been delivering accessible and affordable theatre activities to a wide range of communities and age groups. We now work with over 150 participants every week in venues throughout the authority.
The emphasis of the programme is on co-operation, creativity and originality. Under the guidance of experienced tutors, participants work together to explore and develop their own ideas.
“Beginners” groups concentrate on the development of confidence and creativity through drama games and role play, and perform periodically for family and friends in their home venues.
“Juniors” improve their skills through drama exercises, improvisation and creating their own skits and scenarios. Ideas are developed throughout the sessions, leading to “sharing” performances in Eastwood Park Theatre.
“Intermediate” and “Senior” groups concentrate on creating their own original works which are performed in Eastwood Park Theatre and other venues. These groups also occasionally participate in other Council-sponsored projects.

Craft classes
Fridays, 1pm - 3pm
ARC, Barrhead
A sociable, laid back and relaxing way to spend an afternoon whilst being creative. These craft classes for adults meet weekly to work on all sorts of projects using a number of different techniques. No experience is needed to join in, and you won’t need any materials for the first class.
Art Classes For Adults, Children and Young People
In recent years there has been a tremendous growth in the number of people participating in the visual art as a leisure activity. Books, cd’s and television programmes abound and while they can be very inspiring many people feel they make more progress after joining a class. Attending a class is helpful in a number of ways. Finding time is always a problem. A weekly class allows the activity to become part of your routine. In a taught class the tutor can explain or demonstrate techniques that can be difficult to convey in a book or television programme. Importantly you have the encouragement and support of your fellow students.
Here at Eastwood Park Theatre we are now entering the second year of our programme of art classes. Currently there are five different classes on offer for adults ranging from Life Drawing, Watercolour Painting, Oil and Acrylic Painting and Drawing and Painting. These classes take place at various times throughout the daytime and evening.
Absolute beginners can enrol as well as more experienced students as the classes are structured to allow for individual attention. As well as help with technique, guidance is given on materials and equipment and where they can be purchased at reasonable cost. The classes run in terms of between 8 – 10 weeks and are 2 hours long. Classes are best booked and paid for well in advance as places are limited and some classes have proved to be highly popular.
Our provision for children and young people extends from P1 – S4 with classes on Saturdays and weekday late afternoon/early evenings. The activities in the classes include simple arts and crafts for the youngest age group and build in complexity and sophistication to quite structured drawing, painting and sculptural projects for the older participants.
The scale of the work produced and the materials used are not often encountered in a school setting. We feel there are great benefits to be had from this exposure and from the social aspects of the group projects the children and young people undertake.
Classes are organised on a similar term basis of 8- 10 weeks and range from I hour to 2 hours depending on age group.
