Just Like Us

JUST LIKE US
- the heritage of slavery and abolition
13th September - 3rd October

‘The slaves were people, just like us’ – pupil at Netherlee Primary School

March 2007 was the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery and the trigger for a series of arts and history projects throughout East Renfrewshire supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. In schools and public workshops the heritage of the African slavery era has been explored - from an understanding of the way of life that was deprived of the Africans taken into slavery, the barbarity of the slave masters and the vast profits accrued by Scottish merchant who traded in stolen lives and the produce of slave labour.

The lessons of the 18th century have been examined and applied to contemporary slavery: human trafficking and bonded labour.

Artforms used in these projects include dance, drama, painting, photography, music, creative writing, film, ceramics, bead-work and textiles for quilt-making.

The art of ‘Just Like Us’ provokes controversial questions about the history of Scotland, creates empathy for people from many parts of the world and respect for human rights by understanding a key era in their definition.
