Language and cultural support

The ability to read, write and use numbers, to handle information, express ideas,opinions, make decisions and solve problems as family members, workers, citizens and lifleong learners” The Adult Literacies team of staff can support  YOU to develop your reading, writing and number skills. Supported by the BIG PLUS  campaign, learning is offered in small groups or on a one to one basis  The support YOU receive is free, available in local venues throughout East Renfrewshire.  Individual learning programmes are designed around your needs  YOU may wish to:
  • Brush up on reading, writing spelling and number work because you feel shy.
  • Get support to do new things at work or looking to get back into employment or perhaps you want to improve your chances to get a promotion
  • Be able to write letters and fill in forms more confidently
  • Receive support towards passing industry entrance exams) CITB/SNIPEF)
  • Help your children with their homework

Once you contact us, we will:

  • Arrange to meet you to talk about what you want to do
  • Discuss how you feel about your learning now and where you would like to be
  • Help you to complete your own individual learning plan
  • Set up a learning session on a day, time and place that suits you

  • Meet every three months to look at your progress
  • If you feel ready to move on we will offer guidance and support on progress routes that suit you

What can you do?

Attend one of our free, locally held, Awareness Raising Sessions or make an appointment with a BIG PLUS worker.  You could have a referral information from the local BIG PLUS to hand, know the first name contact and publicity materials on display.  Remember each learner’s need is different so it may take more than one conversation.

English as a Second Language (ESOL)

If your first language is not English and you would like support to improve your spoken or written English, there are lots of ways to get assistance. By working together with Langside College the team can offer a range groups, either in the community, or in the college. Advice and support will be given to you to find which is right for you and all classes are planned to help you with the things you want to be able to do. Volunteering

As well as our highly committed team volunteers play a very important role in Adult and Family Learning.   Volunteers support literacy learners along side a lead totor in small groups or perhaps in one to one sesions with a learner. In addition volunteering gives you the opportunity to develop new skills and and help others to develop theirs. Volunteers are expected to participate in a training course which has been developed nationally in Scotland   Introductory training in Adult Literacies and Learning.   In addition to meeting new people you will also gain new skills and be helping others to do the same.  Payments are made towards any travelling expenses  incurred during your volunteering period with us.   All volunteers will be ask to complete an enhanced criminal record check through Disclosure Scotland.
