Adult education courses
There are six Learndirect Scotland learning centres in East Renfrewshire libraries. These learning centres are also approved by ILA Scotland, which means individual learning accounts can be used to fund some courses.
Learning can take place at a time and a place to suit you and, for your added convenience, free Public Access PCs, are available in all of our libraries.
Computer courses leading to qualifications

ECDL (Full cost £210)
(European Computer Driving Licence)
The ECDL is a widely recognized qualification in computer skills.
Candidates for the ECDL will be given a personal tutor to guide them through the course and prepare them for tests. A mix of learning materials including an online course, books and worksheets is available.
Mock tests will be provided. Meeting times with your tutor are flexible.
The ECDL is made up of 7 modules which are:
Basic concepts of IT
Using the computer and managing files
Word-processing
Spreadsheets
Databases
Presentation
Information and communication (internet and email)
e-Citizen (Full cost £110)
This qualification is designed for people who already have some basic computer skills - it teaches learners to use the Internet for practical tasks such as:
Booking a holiday
Shopping and banking
Contacting local or national government
Finding information on health, hobbies etc
e-Type (Full cost £65)
Ten lessons which will improve your touch typing speed and accuracy.
On completion of the course you sit a 5 minute electronic test. There are 3 grades for the e-Type qualification - Bronze, Silver and Gold.
Computer courses - informal
The Basics
An introduction to computers. This is a tutor-led course for complete beginners.
It introduces:
Mouse skills
Word processing
Internet and e-mail
Classes are small - usually 2-3 people.
Course duration is 1 hour x 6 weeks.
Cost £15.00 (Concession £7.50).
Beyond The Basics
This course follows on from The Basics. It is tutor-led and covers further topics in:
Word processing
Files and folders
Internet
Classes are small - usually 2-3 people.
Course duration is 1 hour x 4 weeks.
Cost £12.00 (Concession £6.00).
Bite-sized - Learning Sessions
These are 1 - 1 ½ hour chunks of learning, designed to plug gaps in your ICT knowledge. Topics include:
Internet for beginners
E-mail for beginners
Getting the most out of the net
Creating headed notepaper
Sending e-mail with file attachments
Scanning and saving a picture
Understanding file management
Creating address labels in Word
Getting started with spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel
Online Supermarket Shopping
Downloading Music to your MP3 Player
Cost £5.00.
