Idling vehicles

Don't idle!

Sitting in your car with the engine running damages the environment unnecessarily and wastes fuel. Idling also stops the catalytic converter, the device that removes pollution in the exhaust, from working properly.

Don't use or carry things in your car when you don't need them, as they can all increase the amount of fuel you use:

  • Roof racks and open windows increase the wind resistance of your car. Wind your window up and take your roof rack off when you aren't using it.

  • Unnecessary items in the boot add to the weight of the car. Check the boot regularly and take out what you don't need.

  • Running your air conditioning when you don't need to can cost you one and a half kilometres for every two litres of fuel. Turn up your air vents instead.
