Air pollution

Air quality

Our Protective Services Division monitors air quality across East Renfrewshire in accordance with the UK national air quality strategy. We also ensure that the Clean Air Act (1993) is enforced in any designated smoke control areas. These are areas covered by smoke control orders, which regulate emissions from houses burning coal and wood.

We have 21 diffusion tubes located across the district, which monitor nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations. The results from the air quality monitoring are analysed to ensure that the "annual mean objective" for NO2 (40 micrograms per cubic metre) is being met. This is the level of nitrogen dioxide in the outside air that should not be exceeded on health grounds, as set by the Government.
